Becoming an Expert
I found a wonderful pin today on Pinterest that led me to a beautifully crafted set of hand-drawn coloring pages. Now, I love to color. I bought myself one of those fancy grown-up coloring books a few months back and love working on it. It's a great way to relax and focus my thoughts after a stressful day.
Today, I decided to print one off and color it to put as my drill and show music binder cover. It's a quote that I've thought a lot about over the last year, especially teaching beginning band. "The expert in anything was once a beginner." It's my focus this new year for two reasons- one, because I need to constantally remind my kids that they're on their way to becoming experts at their instruments, even if they have only learned a few notes. The second reason is for me. I need to remind myself that in my constant pursuit of becoming a better teacher, I started as a beginner. It's okay. Every single one of the teachers I've learned from, respect, and look up to started at square one, just like I did. I'm no expert by any means, and I don't think I'll ever be, but I'm going to focus each day on trying to improve, little by little.
